About QSLibrary

What is the Library for?
Everyone is welcome to read, study, do homework, browse, exchange books and to use the computers at morning tea, lunchtime and during class visits. With teacher permission and a 'search warrant', students may come to the Library with queries at any time of the day.
What is in the Library?
Our books are divided into several collections to make it easier for students to find a book that fits them best. We have Older Fiction, Quick Reads (Early chapter books), Starter Books (for first steps to independent reading), Graphic Novels, Picture Books, Fast & Fun (Quick Reads for older students), Magazines, Sophisticated Picture Books, Young Adult, Reference, Non Fiction and Junior Non-Fiction.
Our Non Fiction collection uses the Dewey Decimal system (click for a link explaining how this works). Our Junior Non-Fiction collection is aimed at students in Years 1-3 but is available for all, this collection is grouped in broad categories such as Animals, Things that Go, Fairytales and Jobs, and placed face out in bins, this makes them really easy to browse through. If you have any questions, please ask the Library Manager.
How are items issued?
Items are issued by Student Librarians during morning tea and lunchtime. During class visits Mrs Nichols or your child's teacher will issue and return books or if a year 6-8 class a student librarian.
How many items can I borrow?
At present students can borrow 3 books for 2 weeks and renew them once, either online or in person. You may also reserve items (again, either online or in person) that are on loan to other borrowers so that when they are returned they will be put aside for you.
What is the Library’s online system and how do I access it?
Oliver Jnr. is Queenspark School Library's online Library service. You can access it by clicking the link at the top of the page or by clicking here. Oliver Jnr. allows you to look at what items you currently have on loan, renew these items, search the catalogue, and reserve items. If you don’t understand how to use Oliver or Olly just ask the Student Librarians or the Library Manager, who will be happy to help.
What must I do in the Library?
The 3Rs (being Respectful, Resolute and Responsible) as well as school policies must be followed at all times. The Library is a place where students can relax with a good book or magazine, spend time with friends, escape the weather (!), play games, enter competitions, finish schoolwork, research and use the computers. Noise is to be kept to a moderate level and students causing disruption will be referred to the Duty Teacher. In wet weather, muddy shoes must be taken off before you enter. Eating, drinking, and chewing gum are not allowed in the Library.
Library Computer Usage
There are four computers within the Library which can be used to access this website or the links from it. Students may also use their Google Drive accounts. Express permission from (and direct supervision by) the Duty Teacher must be sought BEFORE going on the internet for any other purpose. As a general rule, game sites not related to books will not be allowed.
Student Librarians. We are very proud of our Librarians and their contribution to our school.
We employ 40 Student Librarians, 10 of which are Lead Librarians. This means there are 10 teams of; 3 student librarians and a Lead. Each team works at one break time per week.
Every term we select a team where its members have best embodied the 3Rs of Queenspark: Responsible, Resolute and Respectful. Chosen students have shown these qualities whilst also upholding our Queenspark motto of 'Stepping up, Reaching out'.
What if I lose / damage a book?
Please come and discuss the situation with the Library Manager. Lost books do tend to turn up, so we will give you extra time in which to find it. If a book is badly damaged we will charge the replacement cost for that book.
The replacement cost is taken from the RRP (Recommended Retail Price) of the book, either at the time of purchase, or, if that hasn't been recorded in our system, the RRP from the Wheelers website at the time the notice is sent. As each replacement book needs to be covered, barcoded, reinforced, stamped and catalogued again, a $2 fee per book is added. If you would like to purchase the replacement item yourself, you are more than welcome to do so. This is a particularly good idea if you see it on special somewhere. The additional $2.00 charge to cover processing costs incurred in the replacement of the lost book will still apply and can be paid at the school office.
Overdue Items
When your items are up to one month overdue, you will receive a notice sent home via your child. After 6 weeks overdue, an account/invoice will be sent to your parents/whanau. At this stage you must pay the replacement cost of the item or return the item immediately. If you believe an item has been returned, please contact me on the details below so that we can start a 'Claims Returned' process.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Click here to go to the email contact form or come and see me. My telephone number is 03 383 1578 ext. 716.
